Kalk Bay Modern is pleased to showcase its current exhibition titled "Thinking Aloud". This group show includes oil paintings by 6 established and renowned South African artists; Arlene Amaler-Raviv, Clare Menck, Gail Caitlin, Gerald Tabata, Giovanna Biallo and Gwen van Embden.
The title "Thinking Aloud", focuses primarily on the creative process of the artist "thinking' then 'doing'. Each of the participating artists have their own distinct 'voice' and have interpreted the title accordingly. Artwork titles afford the viewer further insight into the interpretation and process behind the work. The term "Thinking Aloud" is generally associated to a system of education to promote learning and comprehension - Thinking and Doing equals Comprehension.
Arlene Amaler-Raviv is a painter who weaves together words, images, politics, current affairs and people. She is a painter of human concerns in a universal arena. Clare Menck, has captured "stolen" moments of ordinary scenes and people through film stills, her family life. These humanised landscapes convey stillness and timelessness. Gail Caitlin's two female nudes although small are powerful; one luminous and floating darkness, the other very earthbound and textural, show her skill as a painter. Gerald Tabata is an urban painter who finds inspiration in the streets and people around him. He is able to articulate beauty and interest in the most ordinary of street scenes through his gestural brush strokes and subtle colour usage. Giovanna Biallo's paintings use blocks of carefully mixed tones and hues of colour to engage and absorb the viewer. Her hand painted ceramic plates play with images and contemporary phrases. Gwen van Embden focuses on childhood conversations, lists, words and memories often using archival collections.
